Whether you’re planning a family vacation, reunion, couples’ getaway or long weekend with friends, Long Lake Memories is perfectly situated to experience the very best of Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan. From sandy beaches and scenic hiking trails to charming downtowns, wineries and even a day trip to Chicago, there’s no shortage of ways to fill your itinerary.
Of course, some of our favorite vacation memories are made right here at the property. Spend the morning kayaking across Long Lake, enjoy lunch on the patio overlooking the water, then head out to explore the Indiana Dunes, downtown Valparaiso or one of Michigan’s picturesque beach towns. At the end of the day, you’ll return to your own private lakefront retreat to relax by the fire, soak in the hot tub or watch the sunset over the lake.

Take the kayaks, paddle boards or canoe out on the lake: Take one of our complimentary kayaks, paddle boards or canoe out for a relaxing paddle around Long Lake. The calm, no-wake water makes it a great activity for beginners and experienced paddlers alike.
Rent our pontoon boat: There’s no better way to spend a summer afternoon than cruising Long Lake with family and friends. Pack a cooler, drop a fishing line or simply enjoy the scenery from the water.
Fish from the dock or boat: Long Lake is home to bass, bluegill, crappie and northern pike, making it a favorite spot for anglers of all ages.
Enjoy the hot tub: After a day of exploring the region, soak in the hot tub and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. It’s especially relaxing after hiking the Indiana Dunes or spending the day in Chicago.
Have dinner outdoors: Fire up the grill and enjoy dinner with a view of the lake. From family cookouts to sunset dinners on the balcony, outdoor meals are a guest favorite.

Downtown Valparaiso blends small-town charm with a vibrant dining, shopping and arts scene. Spend the day browsing locally owned boutiques, enjoying a leisurely lunch, catching a show or simply strolling the walkable streets. It’s one of our favorite places to recommend to guests because there’s truly something for everyone.
Lincolnway: The heart of downtown Valparaiso is lined with locally-owned boutiques, gift shops, cafés and restaurants. Whether you’re window shopping or searching for a unique souvenir, it’s an easy place to spend an afternoon exploring.
Birdie’s: A downtown favorite for creative brunch, lunch and dinner, Birdie’s serves elevated comfort food in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re stopping in for coffee and pastries or gathering with friends for dinner, it’s a wonderful place to experience Valparaiso’s local food scene.
Journeyman Distillery at the American Factory: Set inside a restored historic factory, Journeyman combines handcrafted spirits, dining and impressive industrial architecture. The spacious property makes it especially well suited to groups.
Fluid Coffee Roasters: Start your morning with expertly-crafted coffee and fresh pastries at one of Valparaiso’s favorite local coffee shops. The bright, welcoming atmosphere makes it a great stop before exploring downtown.
Blackbird Café: A cozy downtown favorite serving coffee, baked goods, breakfast and lunch. It is a great place to begin the day before exploring the shops and attractions nearby.
Central Park Plaza: The heart of downtown hosts concerts, festivals, farmers markets and community events throughout the year. During the winter, the plaza transforms into an outdoor ice skating rink that’s fun for all ages.
Porter County Museum: Also known as the PoCo Muse, the museum shares the history and culture of Porter County through artifacts, exhibitions and community programming. General admission is free, and the museum is located at 20 Indiana Avenue in downtown Valparaiso.
Chicago Street Theatre: This beloved community theater presents a variety of plays, musicals and live performances throughout the year. It’s a wonderful option for an evening out and showcases the incredible local arts scene.
Memorial Opera House: Built in 1893, Memorial Opera House is a historic performing arts venue offering musicals, concerts, youth theater and special events. It sits along Indiana Avenue near the Porter County Museum, making the two easy to visit during the same downtown outing.
Seasonal Events: Downtown Valparaiso hosts farmers markets, outdoor concerts, the Popcorn Festival and seasonal celebrations throughout the year. Checking the local calendar before your visit may help you discover something happening during your stay.
Our Tips
Begin with breakfast or coffee at Blackbird Café or Fluid, then explore downtown on foot.
Pair a visit to the Porter County Museum with a performance at Memorial Opera House since they are located near one another.
Check the Chicago Street Theatre, Memorial Opera House and Central Park Plaza calendars before your trip.

Indiana Dunes National Park & State Park

The Indiana Dunes are one of the Midwest’s most unique natural treasures, stretching 15 miles along the southern shore of Lake Michigan. With sandy beaches, towering dunes, scenic hiking trails and breathtaking lake views, it’s easy to spend anywhere from a few hours to an entire day exploring. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach day or a challenging hike, there’s something here for every age and activity level.
West Beach: One of the most popular beaches in the National Park, West Beach features a wide stretch of sand, swimming access and scenic boardwalks through the dunes. It’s a great choice for families looking to spend the day by the water.
Indiana Dunes State Park: Home to some of the tallest sand dunes in the region, the State Park offers beautiful beaches, picnic areas and several of the area’s most iconic hiking trails. It’s a must-visit for first-time guests.
3 Dune Challenge: Looking for a workout? This 1.5-mile challenge takes hikers over the three tallest dunes in the State Park, climbing more than 550 vertical feet. The reward is incredible views and a fun accomplishment for adventurous visitors.
Portage Lakefront & Riverwalk: This peaceful lakefront destination features a beautiful beach, paved walking trails and panoramic views of Lake Michigan. On clear days, you can even spot the Chicago skyline across the water.
Kemil Beach: If you’re looking for a quieter beach experience, Kemil Beach is a wonderful alternative to the busier areas. It’s perfect for swimming, relaxing and watching the sunset.
Bailly Homestead & Chellberg Farm: Step back in time as you explore one of the region’s earliest homesteads and a historic Swedish farm. Together, they offer a fascinating glimpse into the people who settled Northwest Indiana long before it became a national park.
Bird Watching: The Indiana Dunes are internationally recognized as one of North America’s top birding destinations, with more than 350 species recorded throughout the park. Even if you’re not a dedicated birder, keep an eye out for deer, turtles and a wide variety of native wildlife during your visit.
Indiana Dunes Visitor Center: If it’s your first visit, stop at the Visitor Center to pick up trail maps, learn about the park and talk with rangers about current trail conditions and seasonal recommendations. It’s a great starting point for planning your day, especially if you’re not sure which beach or hike is the best fit.
Our Tips
Arrive early during the summer. Parking at the most popular beaches fills quickly on weekends.
Bring comfortable shoes. Hiking through soft sand is more challenging than it looks.
Pack a picnic. Many beaches and trailheads have picnic areas, making it easy to spend the entire day exploring.
Don’t forget the National Park passport! If you collect National Park stamps, stop by the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center before heading into the park.

New Buffalo, Michigan

Just across the Indiana-Michigan border, New Buffalo is a charming beach town that’s perfect for a day trip. Spend the morning browsing boutiques, relax on the beach, enjoy lunch overlooking the harbor and finish the day with ice cream before heading back to the lake. It’s one of our favorite destinations to recommend to guests.
New Buffalo Public Beach: With soft sand, beautiful Lake Michigan views and plenty of room to spread out, New Buffalo Public Beach is the perfect place to spend a summer afternoon. Bring a beach chair, cool off with a swim or simply relax while watching the boats come and go from the nearby marina.
The Stray Dog Bar & Grill: One of New Buffalo’s most popular restaurants, The Stray Dog is known for its lively atmosphere, rooftop seating and views of the harbor. The menu features everything from burgers and seafood to creative cocktails, making it a great stop for lunch or dinner.
Redamak’s: A New Buffalo institution since 1946, Redamak’s has earned a loyal following for its legendary burgers and nostalgic roadside atmosphere. If you’re visiting during the summer, expect a wait—but locals will tell you it’s part of the experience.
Oink’s Dutch Treat: No visit to New Buffalo feels complete without a stop at Oink’s. This beloved ice cream shop has been serving generous scoops of homemade ice cream for decades and is the perfect way to end a day by the beach.
Downtown New Buffalo: New Buffalo’s downtown is filled with locally owned boutiques, art galleries, home décor shops and specialty stores. It’s easy to spend an afternoon wandering from shop to shop before stopping for a coffee or glass of wine.
Beer Church Brewing Co.: Located inside a beautifully restored historic church, Beer Church Brewing combines craft beer with a fun, family-friendly, laid-back atmosphere. Even if you’re not a beer enthusiast, the unique setting alone makes it worth a visit.
Galien River County Park: Just a few minutes from downtown New Buffalo, this peaceful nature preserve features elevated boardwalks through wetlands and a 60-foot observation tower overlooking the Galien River. It’s a beautiful stop for photographers, birdwatchers or anyone looking to enjoy a quieter side of Harbor Country.
Our Tips
Arrive before lunch if you’re visiting on a summer weekend. Parking is easier, the shops are quieter and you’ll beat the crowds to the beach.
Plan for ice cream. Oink’s is a local tradition, and the line moves faster than it looks.
Combine the beach and downtown. They’re just a short walk apart, making it easy to enjoy both without moving your car.
Visit in the fall, too. New Buffalo is just as charming during autumn, with fewer crowds, beautiful fall colors and cozy restaurants.

Beyond New Buffalo, Southwest Michigan offers wineries, orchards, charming beach towns and scenic countryside.
St. Joseph
Perfect for: Families • Beach Day • Kids • Shopping Approximately 1 hour from Long Lake Memories
Perched along the shores of Lake Michigan, St. Joseph is a classic beach town that’s well worth the drive. Spend the day relaxing on the beach, exploring downtown, grabbing a slice of pizza or enjoying one of the area’s family-friendly attractions before watching the sunset over the lake.
Silver Beach: One of Southwest Michigan’s most popular beaches, Silver Beach offers wide sandy shores, gentle waves and beautiful views of Lake Michigan. It’s a perfect destination for swimming, sunbathing or simply spending the day by the water.
Silver Beach Pizza: Just steps from the beach, Silver Beach Pizza is a local favorite known for its handcrafted pizzas, laid-back atmosphere and excellent selection of Michigan craft beer. Whether you’re grabbing lunch after the beach or dinner before heading home, it’s a must-stop while you’re in St. Joseph.
Silver Beach Carousel: This beautifully restored carousel features 48 hand-carved animals and is fun for visitors of all ages. Located just off the beach, it’s an easy stop for families and a charming piece of local history.
Curious Kids’ Museum: Perfect for younger visitors, the Curious Kids’ Museum offers interactive, hands-on exhibits that encourage learning through play. It’s a great rainy-day activity or a fun break from the beach.
Downtown St. Joseph: Downtown is filled with locally owned boutiques, cafés, art galleries and restaurants, all within walking distance of the lake. It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon browsing the shops before stopping for dinner or dessert.
Whirlpool Compass Fountain: One of the largest interactive splash pads in the region, the Whirlpool Compass Fountain is a summertime favorite for families with young children. Bring a towel—the kids will almost certainly want to cool off.
Our Tips
Start at Silver Beach, then walk to the carousel, grab lunch at Silver Beach Pizza and finish the afternoon exploring downtown.
If you’re traveling with kids, plan extra time for the Curious Kids’ Museum and the Whirlpool Compass Fountain.
Stay through sunset if your schedule allows. The sunsets over Lake Michigan are spectacular and a perfect way to end your visit.

Lemon Creek Winery: One of Michigan’s oldest family-owned wineries, Lemon Creek has been producing estate-grown wines since 1855. Enjoy a tasting overlooking the vineyards, relax on the spacious grounds or visit during harvest season when the property is especially beautiful.

Choose two or three wineries instead of trying to visit them all. You’ll have a more relaxed experience and plenty of time to enjoy each stop.
Visit during late summer or fall when the vineyards, orchards and countryside are at their most beautiful.
Bring a cooler. You’ll likely leave with bottles of wine, fresh fruit, baked goods and other local favorites to enjoy back at Long Lake Memories.

One of the biggest perks of staying at Long Lake Memories is having Chicago within easy reach. Whether you drive via the Chicago Skyway or hop aboard the South Shore Line for a stress-free ride into the city, Chicago makes for an unforgettable day trip filled with world-class museums, incredible food, iconic architecture and lakefront views.
Ride the South Shore Line: Skip the traffic and let someone else do the driving. The South Shore Line offers convenient service from nearby Dune Park and Portage/Ogden Dunes stations, taking you directly into downtown Chicago. It’s one of the easiest ways to experience the city without worrying about parking.
Millennium Park & Cloud Gate (“The Bean”): No first trip to Chicago is complete without visiting Millennium Park. Snap a photo at the famous Cloud Gate sculpture, stroll through the gardens or relax on the Great Lawn while taking in the city’s impressive skyline.
Chicago River Architecture Cruise: If you only do one thing in Chicago, make it an architecture cruise. You’ll learn about the city’s fascinating history while seeing many of its most iconic buildings from the water. It’s consistently ranked among the best experiences in the city—and for good reason.

Our Tips
Take the South Shore Line if you’re planning to spend the day downtown. You’ll avoid city traffic and expensive parking, and Union Station is within walking distance or a short rideshare from many attractions.
Pick one neighborhood or area instead of trying to see the entire city in one day. You’ll have a much more enjoyable experience.
Book architecture cruises in advance during the summer—they often sell out.
Wear comfortable shoes. Chicago is best explored on foot, and you’ll likely log several miles without realizing it.

Looking to stay closer to home? Northwest Indiana is home to several beautiful parks, nature preserves and hiking trails. Whether you’re searching for a leisurely walk, scenic overlooks or a peaceful afternoon surrounded by nature, these local favorites are well worth exploring.
Sunset Hill Farm County Park: One of Porter County’s most popular parks, Sunset Hill Farm features miles of paved and natural trails winding through restored prairie, woodlands and rolling hills. True to its name, it’s also one of the best places in the area to catch a beautiful sunset.
Rogers Lakewood Park: Located just minutes from Long Lake Memories, Rogers Lakewood Park offers quiet wooded trails, open green space and beautiful views of the surrounding lakes. It’s a great choice for a peaceful morning walk or an easy outing with the family.
Coffee Creek Preserve: This scenic nature preserve features a mix of boardwalks, wetlands, woodlands and prairie habitats. The well-maintained trails are relatively flat, making Coffee Creek a wonderful option for birdwatching, photography or a relaxing stroll.
Gabis Arboretum: With more than 300 acres to explore, Gabis Arboretum offers miles of hiking trails, beautiful gardens, sculptures and one of the region’s largest railway gardens. Seasonal events throughout the year make every visit a little different.
Our Tips
